So how can we hate him?

But, yeah, I think that there are things we are likely just to disagree on. :-)

I have no intention of going back, but the same mind numbing/warping forces that drew a person into that religion to begin with can potentially drag them back again. And yes, in this case, I am comparing it to an addiction or a disease, since we are kind of focused on the more negative aspects of it.

For many, the cultural conditioning is strong. It is possible to be dragged back into religion even if part of them is not convinced. I have seen it happen. It's not pretty. It has all the symptoms of a relapse for someone that has been sober for decades. :/

Re: There Are No Former Atheists

You may have heard Christians say that atheists are 'mad at god,' or 'hate god,' or 'just want to sin.' All of these strongly imply (or require, I think) that the atheist really does believe in god.

It isn't possible, in the minds of many Christians, that anyone could actually doubt god's existence. The view of the atheist isn't one they accept can possibly be. You have heard, I trust, the view that there aren't really any atheists at all?

These are the Christians that tout the 'conversion' of atheists to Christianity. It is this 'return' that I object to. I don't think that anyone who genuinely has arrived—through reason—at the conclusion that a creator god is about as likely as the Flying Spaghetti Monster can—through reason—change her or his mind about Jesus.

Re-read the passage on what enlightenment actually means.

I maintain that there just isn't any going back from that.

—Gideon

Re: There Are No Former Atheists

This has "no true Scotsman" written all over it.

Re: There Are No Former Atheists

I have never heard a Christian say that EVER. I have only ever heard it said that if they are Atheists now they were obviously never Christians to begin with. And I didn't buy the argument then either.

We obviously have different views of the world, but I don't see myself ever accepting the thesis presented here.

Basically, people change. They take in new ideas, and adjust course. We may not always agree with their new ideas, but it happens. Just because they have gone a path where they have chosen to believe differently now, does not mean that they never believed as you.

Re: Tarot

Intriguing site. At times, it almost feels as though the reader’s senses are being bombarded by all of the smells, feelings, sights, and sounds as the characters interact…

…there are several erotic scenes with dozens of spicy details thrown in throughout the story. This book is intended for those readers who very much enjoy fantasy and, as far as erotica goes, put great value on the development of the story and characters…

…The story is quite inviting and the characters developed in such a way as to make them feel like they are part of the fabric of folklore.

_______________________________—Annie K. I mused about writing a script called "All the other fairies are cunts." The whole film being a one scene vitriolic monologue by a pot-bellied balding fairy in a stained wife beater complaining that all the other fairies are cunts. This reminded me of that.. I laughed and laughed and snorted coffee out my nose.. so thanks

Re: There Are No Former Atheists

Agreed. And I agree with Sic Transits first sentence. If a person really has the 3 + 2 = 5 experience with Christianity, they are still Christian, no matter what they say now. I was a 3 + 1 = 5 professing Christian. I always wondered why it didn't add up, and then I grew up and discovered why. Because it's not true. That was the source of my confusion and I professed Christianity to conform to parents and my environment, even though it made no sense.

Re: Why are You Atheists So Angry?

Oh, I'm sure you're right. Shame about the movie footage you (or someone) chose to illustrate the "God got my mother a better mortgage" bit.... Actually, no, given the context, it's hysterical. That particular old woman was a witch, and the young blond was about to be irrevocably cursed by her. "Drag Me To Hell" 2009. Since I like Sam Harris, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here, and conclude that it was an in-joke.

Re: Sex Is Good

The error is a confusion between the respect that is necessary for the relationship as a whole and the role playing that makes sex so much more fun.

Re: Sex Is Good

Love this!
